Container of the African Spirit – Welcome to The Pottery Gallery

Throughout the ages, pottery has been a source of creativity and an expression of the human soul. The craft of pottery dates back thousands of years, and can be traced back to the first humans who treaded the Africa soil. It is a creation that is sprung from this very soil, the earth beneath us, and moulded with care by the passionate and skilful hands of artisans. With its beauty and utility, pottery is a recognised source of healing and happiness not only for the end user, but also for the maker. Both beautiful and useful at the same time, pottery is more than just an art form – perhaps a container of the African spirit. Which is exactly what you will discover at The Pottery Gallery amidst the sugarcane plantations and overlooking the Indian Ocean near Ballito on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

People of Heaven

If landscapes could talk, what tales they would tell about the trials and tribulations of the myriad cultures that lived and died within them. Few in South Africa would speak louder than the eMakhosini or Valley of the Kings in KwaZulu-Natal, for this is the birthplace and traditional homeland of the Zulus or People of Heaven.

Willa B. Brown – The African-American Aviatrix

The aviation industry a century ago was very different to the one we know today. Several airports across the USA were racially segregated and the military had only white personnel. But this soon changed for the better through the actions of one determined woman, who broke through the racial barriers and paved the way for others to follow for many years to come.

Mozart – 250 Years of Genius set to Music
Text & Images: © Roland Hanewald
On any given summer day, more than forty thousand tourists, a European record only topped by Venice, invade the venerable Austrian city of Salzburg. This figure may appear quite large vis-a-vis a burgh of only 146,000 inhabitants, but from the start of 2006 on, it will increase dramatically. Visitors will not only show up in summer then, but in the midst of winter, and not only sporadically, but with absolute regularity, not omitting a single day.

From New York to Cape Town – Local artist Anthony Mutheki excels
Text & Images: Craig Mark of The Mark Galleries
It is ironic that an artist, who was living in a shelter in Johannesburg as little as 10 years ago, has become such an international success and has been selected by Decorex as their chosen artist for their Cape Town show in 2006.

Hotel Heinitzburg – The Brightest Jewel in the Land of Gems
Text: Jana du Plessis
Images: © Hotel Heinitzburg
A mysterious castle rises from the top of the city of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, luring the curious-minded to its front doors. The castle is known as Hotel Heinitzburg where guests are made to feel like kings and queens. For those who don’t believe in fairy tales, Hotel Heinitzburg will awaken even the most cynical of imaginations – and not just because, when you sink your head into the soft white pillows after a day of indulgence, the secretive whispers of Margarethe von Heinitz can be heard drifting on the wind.

Botswana – A Wilderness Safari

It’s sweltering out on the tarmac at Maun airport, probably in the mid-thirties, which seems a world away from windy Cape Town where hours earlier we had embarked upon our journey. Representatives from our charter flight company, Sefofane, taxi us from the terminal building to a single-engine Cessna for what will be the third flight of the day. After a short stop in Gaborone we had taken an hour-long trip to the town of Maun, the gateway to northern Botswana’s finest tourist hotspots.

Whizzing Down Lizzie and Dizzie – Riding the Dunes in Namibia
Text & Images: Roland Hanewald
In countries with no or little snow, such as Namibia, people in quest of winter-sport venues have to look around for alternatives. “Let’s do some sand schussing!” This is the latest battle cry in that hot and arid place, which conveniently enough, consists mostly of gritty stuff from one end to the other. The Namib Desert, an interminable ancient sea of sand, covers the entire west of the country, with huge dunes rising in the neighbourhood of the coastal town of Walvis Bay. There, the twins “Lizzie & Dizzie” reach dizzying heights of up to 160 metres, near to world-record dimensions.

Birding & Forestry in Zululand

Bird watching is a leisurely and relaxing hobby that fulfils our natural curiosity and desire to learn. It also brings us face to face with the need to challenge ourselves. People engage in bird watching for many reasons, but whatever these reasons are, it is certainly worth trying at least once. And what better place to get acquainted with the hobby than the beautiful forests of Zululand.

SOMMELIER IN TRAINING – Enoch Zaleni
Text: James Kennedy
Images: © Fairview Wine & Cheese Estate
Enoch Zaleni has a broad, convincing smile. It is a big part of his positive, outgoing outlook on life. Looking at him across the table I can easily imagine that he has been this cheerful and optimistic for most of his 24 years. There is still a smile when his mid-morning shift has been interrupted for yet another pesky press interview. I can sense the energy in his eagerness to get back to work. For a wine waiter, Enoch sure has been receiving an uncommon number of visits from local journalists recently. The reason for the media attention is that he has just returned from a month’s work experience at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant, Fifteen, in London.
