By the end of the 19th century the German empire was firmly established in distant Southwest Africa after the European powers had, in 1884, agreed on the division of the big continent among themselves. Its southwestern corner became a German “protectorate,” and in the following year the first German settlers started arriving. In 1891 Windhoek, located near the geographic centre of the new colony, was proclaimed the administrative capital.
